  • Lautaro Martínez, Juan Cuadrado, Carlos Augusto, Alexis Sánchez, and Tajon Buchanan were crowned title winners in the Italian league.
  • A win over Milan, their classic rivals, secured the title with five matches remaining.

This Monday, April 22, Inter won the Derby della Madonnina 2-1 and were crowned champions of the 2023/24 Serie A season. The team’s impressive campaign features talents from various nations, especially notable figures from South American football who may also appear in the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa América in the United States. A similar situation to Bayer Leverkusen, who celebrated their title in Germany a few days ago.

Among them, there are four CONMEBOL players and one from Concacaf: Lautaro Martínez, Juan Cuadrado, Alexis Sánchez, and Carlos Augusto, along with Canadian Tajon Buchanan. This is how each one contributed to this season’s Scudetto win:

Lautaro Martínez

The Argentine is a goal-scoring machine for coach Simone Inzaghi’s team and also a player trusted by Lionel Scaloni, the manager of Argentina, the current champions of the CONMEBOL Copa América™ and the FIFA World Cup. The player, who arrived in Italy from Racing Club in Argentina, has scored 23 goals and comfortably leads the Italian League’s top scorer chart.

The 26-year-old top scorer is already a CONMEBOL Copa América™ champion, having won the 2021 edition with Argentina.

Juan Cuadrado

The experienced Cuadrado has become synonymous with Italian football. He has spent almost fifteen continuous years in Serie A, representing Udinese, Lecce, Fiorentina, Juventus, and now Internazionale. With the Nerazzurri, he achieved an impressive sixth title in the Italian league, although his numbers have been more modest during the last year (2 assists in 7 games so far).

He is also a specialist in the CONMEBOL Copa América™, potentially appearing in the tournament for the sixth time in 2024 if called up by Néstor Lorenzo, Colombia’s coach on this occasion.

Alexis Sánchez

The pride of Chile, a two-time CONMEBOL Copa América™ champion, and now an icon of Italian football. Alexis Sánchez continues to achieve great milestones on the field, now with his second Serie A title for Inter, the first being in 2020-21, ending a long drought for the Nerazzurri. This season, he has scored 2 goals and provided 4 assists.

With La Roja, the forward was a key player in the back-to-back championships, with one standout moment being the penalty scored in the 2015 CONMEBOL Copa América™ final, defeating Argentina at home, a victory so cherished by Chileans.

Carlos Augusto

Brazilian Carlos Augusto is one of the new faces in Italian football but is gaining a reputation as an important option for Inter Milan’s championship team. Initially signed by Monza after standing out at Corinthians in Brazil, he has played two games for the Brazilian national team and maintains hope of making Dorival Júnior‘s final list for the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa América™.

In the Milanese victorious campaign, the left-back provided three assists in 31 Serie A matches, ten of them as a starter.

Tajon Buchanan

Buchanan is another name that could make headlines in the United States in June while representing Canada. The Canadians will make their first CONMEBOL Copa América™ appearance in this year’s edition, and the young player wants to make his compatriots proud after leaving a good impression in the last FIFA World Cup held in Qatar.

The 25-year-old player just arrived in Italy and has already won his first title in one of the world’s most important football leagues. With five appearances in Serie A, he is even more prepared to be an important player for Canadians during this year’s continental tournament.
