Uruguay's fourth championship in the 1923 CONMEBOL Copa America™️

• Uruguay lifted their fourth continental title in 1923.
• Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay participated in this edition of the tournament.

Uruguay once more served as the host for the CONMEBOL Copa America™️, from October 29th to December 2nd, 1923, at the Parque Central Stadium in Montevideo, which had undergone a complete renovation at the time.

The ‘Charrúa’ side once again capitalized on their home-field advantage and clinched their fourth continental title with a team primarily composed of Nacional players. The Uruguayans won all the matches on their path to the championship: 2-0 against Paraguay, 2-1 against Brazil, and 2-0 against Argentina.

Atilio Narancio, director at Club Nacional de Football, promised the Uruguayan players that if they seized the South American title, he would take them to the Olympic Games the following year. Uruguay indeed secured victory in America, and in 1924, they won the gold medal in Paris.

Six matches were played in the tournament, resulting in a total of 18 goals scored, averaging 3 goals per game. The top scorers were Valdino Aguirre from the runner-up team Argentina and Pedro Petrone from Uruguay, each with three goals.

Pedro Petrone played for the modest Charley Football Club in Uruguay, and was later transferred to Fiorentina, where he became a top scorer in the Italian league.
