Chile defeats Colombia in penalties and reaches the semi-final

Chile continue their search for a three-time CONMEBOL Copa América championship after beating Colombia 5-4 on penalties in the quarter-finals on Friday after drawing without goals in regular time in Sao Paulo.

Both teams showed their fighting spirit during the ninety minutes, when the two-time champions came closest to opening the scoring from counter-attacks and arrivals on the sidelines.

The 0-0 lead the semifinals to penalties.

The Chileans made perfect marks by penalties, with goals from Arturo Vidal, Eduardo Vargas, Erick Pulgar, Charles Aránguiz and Alexis Sánchez.

William Tesillo missed the last shot for Colombia after James Rodriguez, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado, Edwin Cardona and Yerry Mina had scored.

Chile will continue defending their title in the semi-finals against the winner of the match between Uruguay and Peru on Saturday.

Colombia, who will go home without conceding a goal, could not defeat the historic paternity of the Chileans in the competition, whom they have not won since 2011 and have never won in direct eliminatory matches.

·         Chile and Colombia drew for the third time in their 12 Copa América matches, the previous ones in 1949 and 1991 (7 wins for Chile and 2 for Colombia).
