Gustavo Alfaro has embarked on a new journey: the Argentine has become the new head coach of the Paraguay national team, replacing Daniel Garnero, who led the team in the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™.
“The feeling towards a national team is sublime; I want wearing the Paraguay jersey to be something that’s earned, because there is a lot of quality and quantity of players. It's not easy to get a player to perform the same way in their club as in a national team. One must complement these performances, and the challenge is for the players to adapt to the national team. I always want to win. I bet on success and not failure, and in that sense, we just need to work hard,” Alfaro said during his presentation.
Alfaro comes from coaching Costa Rica, which he led and managed in the last CONMEBOL Copa América™, sharing the Group Stage with Paraguay. He was also present in the 2021 edition, but on that occasion, he was coaching Ecuador, a team with which he reached the Quarterfinals.
Alfaro's coaching staff will include Carlos González (Assistant Coach), Claudio Cristofanelli (Assistant Coach), Sergio Chiarelli (Fitness Coach), Pedro Arbelaiz (Fitness Coach), Diego Carranza (Goalkeeping Coach), Iván Tcherkaski (Psychologist), and Alejandro Manograsso (Video Analyst).
When does Alfaro debut with Paraguay?
Gustavo Alfaro's debut with Paraguay will be on September 6th, in the South American Qualifiers, against Uruguay at the Estadio Centenario. Paraguay is currently in seventh place, in the playoff spot for the next World Cup.
