Uruguay is five-time champion in 1924 - Heading to the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America™️

The Uruguayan team once again hosted and were crowned champions of the 1924 CONMEBOL Copa America™️, securing their fifth continental championship. Furthermore, they clinched the Olympic gold medal in Paris that same year, solidifying their status as the world’s top national team.

The 1924 CONMEBOL Copa America™️ took place from October 12th to November 2nd at the Parque Central Stadium in Montevideo, Uruguay, with Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay as participating teams.

The winning side was led by Pedro Petrone, who was the tournament’s leading scorer for the second consecutive edition with four goals, alongside the legendary defender José Nasazzi.

In this tournament, a 19-year-old named Aurelio González made his debut with the Paraguayan team. A striker who would later earn the nickname ‘El Gran Capitán’ (The Great Captain), known for his remarkable personality and courage both on and off the field. Apart from his football career, Aurelio was a decorated soldier during the 1932 Chaco War.

The matches were growing increasingly intense, and only in one of the six played did the score turn around—a game in which Paraguay initially took the lead against Chile but ended up losing 3-1.

The only clash Uruguay failed to win was against Argentina, resulting in a goalless draw thanks to an outstanding performance by the ‘Albiceleste’ goalkeeper Américo Tesoriere, who was lifted onto the shoulders of his rivals Zibichi and Romano to receive a standing ovation from the home fans.

Pedro Petrone became the first Uruguayan footballer to score three goals in a single game, in the 5-0 victory over Chile on October 19th.

Anticipating a rivalry that would repeat itself in the 1930 World Cup, Argentina and Uruguay played each other for the title.
