Uruguay's victory represented by a Cavani's goal

Uruguay defeated Chile 1-0 on Monday after an intense match and finished in the top of Group C of CONMEBOL Copa América Brazil 2019.

Both teams had already advanced to the quarter-finals before this match: Uruguay will face Peru, while Chile will face Colombia.

In the 82nd minute, Edinson Cavani’s header, gave the Charrúas victory.

The goal, following a center of Jonathan Rodriguez headed by the ‘Matador’, encouraged a game that until then had been equal.

With this result, Uruguay finished top of Group C with seven points. Chile is second with six points, Japan in third place with two points and Ecuador last with one unit, both eliminated.

Statistics

·         Chile is the rival that Uruguay has defeated the most times in the history of the Copa América, beating it in 19 of the 30 matches played in the competition (4E 7D).

·         Uruguay played its 200th match in Copa América; it is the first country to reach that number in the competition (110V 35E 55D).

·         Chile lost an undefeated seven matches in Copa América (6V 1E); it was just their second defeat in the last three editions of this tournament (10V 3E 2D) – the other defeat was 1-2 to Argentina in the 2016 group stage.

·         Oscar Tabarez is the first coach in history to reach 200 games in front of the same team; he has 99 wins, 48 draws and 53 defeats with Uruguay (including all the games in which he had a contract with Uruguay, despite he was not present as a  substitutes in any of them)

·         Uruguay and Chile have finished 0-0 in the first half for the third consecutive match in Copa América (1V Chile, 1E and 1V Uruguay); the last time they didn’t do that was in 1999 (Uruguay 1-0 Chile at halftime, 1-1 at the end of the match).

·         Uruguay won three of their last four Copa América matches (1E); they had won one of the previous six in the competition (1E 4D).

·         Luis Suarez did not complete any passes to Edinson Cavani in the match against Chile; Cavani scored the winning goal with the only pass he received from Jonathan Rodriguez.

·         Uruguay defeated Chile 1-0 with just eight attempted shots; their smallest amount in a victory since beating Portugal 2-1 in the 2018 World Cup (5 shots).

·         Five of Edinson Cavani’s last 10 goals with Uruguay were headers; the forward scored his 12th goal in this way with Uruguay in all competitions, at least four more than any other The Celeste player in the 21st century (8, José Marí Giménez).

·         Federico Valverde won the seven overhead games he played in Uruguay’s victory over Chile; the most for a Uruguayan player in a 2019 Copa América match.
