Peru coach Ricardo Gareca took «full responsibility» for Brazil’s 5-0 win in São Paulo on Saturday 22 June and said the huge scoreline was the result of a «great» opponent who «largely» beat them.

«We were overwhelmed from start to finish, we didn’t expect this, but it happened, the most important thing is to capitalize on all this that has happened to us, although it is painful, for all the people who came and for us in particular», said the Argentine coach at the press conference after the match.

«I assume all the responsibility, as the coach, I was the one who planned the game», he added. «For a result of this nature we have to rethink many things», he said.

The Peruvians lost 5-0 at the Arena Corinthians Stadium against the hosts, who classified the quarterfinals as Group A leaders after the victory.
For its part, Venezuela’s 3-1 win over Bolivia in Belo Horizonte classified La Vinotinto as second in the zone, so Peru, with four points and a difference of -4 goals, depends on the other games to classify as third best.

«Is not up to us, anymore, so we have to wait, it’s an uncomfortable situation and logically we had other expectations», he said.

El Tigre said that the win «hurts in the soul» of his team, but said that the team has «given more joy than shame».

«Within this path there are obstacles, we have to go on, we have to overcome, we have to accommodate ourselves again, is the only thing I can analyze, we have to see and find the way back», he said.
