In the third chapter of this delivery, know the ‘Tricolor’ National Team and its history at the CONMEBOL Copa América.

The National Team of Ecuador have participated around 27 times in the CONMEBOL Copa América. The appearance in Brazil 2019 will be their 28th, in a tournament guided by the Colombian Hernán Darío ‘Bolillo’ Gómez arrive with high expectations in order to have their best participation in the maximum continental tournament of national teams to also get in form to the dispute for a place in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Ecuador had its first participation in the South American Championship in 1939, 80 years ago. The match took place in Peru. It was precisely the Ecuadorian team that debuted in that tournament.

One of the curious facts of that tournament was Ecuador. His coach, Ramón Unamuno, played his team’s first match against Peru, with a 5-2 victory for the Incas.

Ecuador has hosted the CONMEBOL Copa América on 3 occasions: 1947, 1959 and 1993.

Another of the curiosities that have Ecuador as protagonist happened in 1959, year in which two editions of the South American Championship were played. In the month of March of that year, the 26th edition of the tournament was played in Argentina, which eventually ended up winning the title.

However, and to celebrate the inauguration of the Modelo stadium in Guayaquil, Ecuador asked the tournament organization to hold a new edition of the championship. That’s how it was: between the 5th and the 25th of December 1959, the twenty-seventh South American Tournament was played.

With Antonio Valencia as his maximum figure, accompanied by Felipe Caicedo and Jéfferson Montero who could also be part of the team that plays the continental tournament, Ecuador hopes to make a good role and, if possible, improve the fourth place in the tournament that he achieved in two occasions, it was precisely in the 1947 and 1959 tournaments that hosted both times.

Ecuador is part of Group C with Japan, Chile and Uruguay, against the latter will have their debut at the CONMEBOL Copa América Brazil 2019 on June 16 in Belo Horizonte.
