Women's Finalissima: Brazil lose to England in a dramatic penalty shootout

Brazil and England made history when they faced each other at Wembley Stadium. The first ever Women’s Finalissima was witnessed by 83,123 people. After a 1-1 draw, the Brazilian team lost 4-2 on penalties.

The action

Coach Pia Sundhage opted to start the match with a line of three defenders. The tactical scheme worked well, providing strong defence against an effective English offense. On the other hand, the Brazilians had too many errors in passing and finishing. In the 22nd minute, Lucy Bronze and Stanway made a good play, and Toone sent the ball into the back of the net.

In the second half, Sundhage’s changes during the break paid off. Andressa Alves, called at the last minute to join the team, took advantage of a rebound and equalized for Brazil in stoppage time.

In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Lelê saved the Lionesses’ second shot, but Tamires and Rafaelle missed their kicks and England claimed the title.

The Brazilian team now faces Germany in Nuremberg on April 11. This will be the team’s last official friendly before the 2023 FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand call-up.
