The CONMEBOL Copa America 2021 pays homage to a genius of world football

Prior to kickoff at Argentina‘s debut in the 2021 CONMEBOL Copa America against Chile, the Nilton Santos Stadium in Rio de Janeiro was lit in blue and white light in honor of one of the greatest players in history: Diego Armando Maradona.

In an unfortgettable spectacle that included amazing sound, lighting, music and fireworks, the genius of world football, who passed away in November 2020, was celebrated and remembered.

The millions of spectators who follow the CONMEBOL Copa América 2021 from every corner of the world were able to enjoy this heartfelt tribute to the Argentine star, who left his mark in the famous blue and white both on and off the field.

This recognition of the sporting career and legacy of Diego Armando Maradona was made ahead of the opening game of Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina against Chile in Group A.

Diego was born in Villa Fiorito and played three editions of the CONMEBOL Copa América (1979, 1987 and 1989). In total he played 12 games and scored 4 goals at the tournament.

His most impactful contribution to the oldest national team tournament in the world came in 1987. This edition was placed in Argentina and the immortal 10 scored 3 goals in the 4 games he played. Argentina finished in 4th place on that occasion.

His passing was felt around the world and his legacy will forever be carried by those who enjoyed the joy, invention, control and quality with which he dribbled the football.
