Year in Review: The Argentina National Team in 2024

La Albiceleste had an exceptional year, winning the CONMEBOL Copa América™ and remaining at the top of the Qualifiers.

The Albiceleste won the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™ and stayed atop the standings in the World Cup 2026 Qualifiers. Their final record for the year was 16 matches played, with 12 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses.

With Lionel Scaloni at the helm, as in the 2021 edition, the Albiceleste claimed their 16th title in the world’s oldest national team tournament. They won all three matches in the Group Stage: 2-0 against Canada, 1-0 against Chile, and 2-0 against Peru.


In the Quarterfinals, they defeated Ecuador on penalties after a 1-1 draw.


In the Semifinals, they once again faced Canada, with the same result: 2-0.


The Final saw Argentina triumph 1-0 over Colombia, with a goal in extra time.

El Toro scored five goals during the tournament, including the decisive one in the Final against Colombia. He was also Argentina’s top scorer of the season, netting 11 of the national team’s 33 goals.




Lionel Messi: Record in the CONMEBOL Copa América™


The Argentine captain became the player with the most appearances in the world’s oldest national team tournament, reaching 39 matches and surpassing Chile’s Sergio Livingstone, who had 34. This was Messi’s seventh Copa América and his second title.




Ángel Di María retired from the Argentina national team


El Fideo, a legendary figure for the Albiceleste, ended his 16-year international career. His final match was against Colombia on July 14 at Hard Rock Stadium, marking his farewell to the national team. Di María won two CONMEBOL Copa América™ titles and scored in the 2021 Final against Brazil.




Argentina in the Qualifiers


As the reigning World Cup champions, Argentina maintained their lead in the World Cup 2026 Qualifiers. In 2024, they achieved three wins, one draw, and two losses, amassing 25 points.
