The Rules Everyone Needs to Know About Beach Soccer

With just days to go until the first CONMEBOL Copa América™ of the year, here are the essential details to enjoy the tournament.

Beach Soccer is a growing sport that continues to attract new fans. With an important tournament just around the corner, here’s a look at the rules that will apply in Iquique.




How many players are there?


Each team can bring 12 players to the tournament.


Matches are played with five players on the field, and the minimum required to play is three. A goalkeeper must always be on the field.




Game duration in Beach Soccer


Matches are divided into three periods of 12 minutes, with three-minute intervals between each period.




Can a match end in a draw?


A match cannot end in a draw. If the game is tied after the 36 minutes of regulation time, a 3-minute extra time will be played.


If the tie persists, the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout (five penalties per team). If the tie remains, penalties will continue in a sudden-death format (one per team) until one side gains an advantage.




How many points does a victory give?


Victory in regular time: 3 points.


Victory in extra time: 2 points.


Victory in penalties: 1 point.


Loss (at any stage): 0 points.


Who qualifies for the World Cup in Seychelles?


The two tournament finalists and the winner of the third-place match will qualify for the World Cup, which will take place from May 1 to May 11.
