Nations represented in the CONMEBOL Copa America™, Argentina, the United States and Paraguay are seeing their Olympic teams doing well in men's football. The three under-23 teams are qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games tournament quarterfinals and are still looking for medals in the sport.
It is worth noting that six players called up to the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™ are in contention for the tournament on French soil, such as Julián Álvarez, Nicolás Otamendi, Gerónimo Rulli (Argentina), Julio Enciso (Paraguay) and Miles Robinson (USA). Despite the age limit for participating players, Olympic Men's Soccer allows each team to have up to three players over the age of 23 on their rosters.
All Quarter-Final matches take place on Friday, August 2 in four locations across France. All times listed below are local for Paris, France (GMT+2).
Argentina
With two gold medals in their history (Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008), the Argentine team added 6 points and qualified for the Quarterfinals as second place in Group B. After a defeat in the opening match to Morocco (1-2), the team led by Javier Mascherano overcame Iraq (3-1) and Ukraine (2-0) to advance. Thiago Almada (2 goals) and Kevin Zenón (2 assists) are some of the highlights of the Albiceleste.
The first opponent in the final phase will be France, who went through as the leader in Group A: the match will be held in Bordeaux at 9 pm local time.
United States
Also in second place, but in Group A, the United States took an important step after being absent from the last three Olympic tournaments in Men's Soccer. Now, Marko Mitrovic and company will face Morocco after earning 6 points in their first three games in the tournament: they were defeated by France (0-3) before overcoming New Zealand (4-1) and Guinea (3-0) in the same group.
The quarterfinal duel is scheduled for 3 pm at the Parc des Princes in Paris.
Paraguay
La Albirroja will face Egypt in the Quarterfinals, after finishing second in Group D with victories over Israel (4-2) and Mali (1-0) – they suffered 5-0 in their debut against leader Japan. Marcelo Fernández scored three goals in the group stage and is one of the top scorers in the men's tournament, while Julio Enciso and Fabián Balbuena, who also took the field in the last CONMEBOL Copa América™, scored one each.
The duel against the Egyptians takes place in Marseille, at 7 pm on the 2nd.
