The 6 CONMEBOL Copa América™ Players Who are at the Olympic Games

Argentina, Paraguay, and the United States will participate in Paris 2024 and have players who participated in the oldest national team tournament in the world.

  • Three champions of the CONMEBOL Copa América™ will be in France.  The tournament begins on July 24 and ends on August 9.
  • Argentina was crowned champion of the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™ and three of its players will be in Paris: Julián Álvarez, Nicolás Otamendi, and Gerónimo Rulli.

The forward scored two goals in the tournament: in the opening match and in the semifinal, both against Canada. In addition to having won the CONMEBOL Copa América™ twice, Julián was a champion of the FIFA World Cup, CONMEBOL Libertadores, and Champions League; the Olympic gold is the major tournament missing for the 24-year-old footballer.


Otamendi played five matches in the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™ and is the most experienced (36 years old) in the Argentine squad that will compete in the Olympic Games.


Gerónimo Rulli was part of Lionel Scaloni's squad that won the 16th title in the oldest national team tournament in the world but did not play any matches. He is 32 years old and is the third over-23 player (behind Álvarez and Otamendi) in the team led by Javier Mascherano.


Paraguay, champion of the U-23 Pre-Olympic, will have Julio Enciso in Paris, one of the main figures of the senior national team. At just 20 years old, the Brighton player scored a goal in the CONMEBOL Copa América™ against Colombia.


One of the three over-23 players the United States will take to the Olympic Games is Miles Robinson, a midfielder for FC Cincinnati. The 27-year-old midfielder was part of the squad in the CONMEBOL Copa América™ but did not play any matches.

  • Argentina is the only country that has won more than one gold medal in the men's football tournament of the Olympic Games among those participating in the Paris 2024 competition. Hungary (3 gold), Brazil (2), Great Britain (2), Uruguay (2), and USSR (2) complete the list but will not compete in the next edition.
  • Four of the last Olympic gold medals in men's football were won by South American countries: Athens 2004 (Argentina), Beijing 2008 (Argentina), Rio 2016 (Brazil), and Tokyo 2020 (Brazil).
  • Javier Mascherano, current coach of Argentina for the men's football tournament of the Olympic Games, is the Argentine representative who has won the most Olympic gold medals in history, along with polo player Juan Nelson. With a new first place in Paris 2024, this time as a coach, he will set a new record.
  • Paraguay will compete in its third men's football tournament in the Olympic Games, being the only country with two participations and at least one medal in the competition. This medal was obtained in 2004 after losing to Argentina in the Athens final.
