Libertadores Quarterfinals Highlight Strong Presence of CONMEBOL Copa América™

Several players who competed in the U.S. are now vying for the continental title.

This week, the first leg of the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals was played, and there was a strong presence of stars from the CONMEBOL Copa América United States 2024™.


Colo-Colo and River opened the series on Tuesday, showcasing a field packed with participants from the world's oldest national team tournament. On the Chilean side: Cortés, Isla, Pávez, Zavala, and Bolados (the latter two entered in the second half). For River: Armani, Pezzella, Acuña (all champions with Argentina), Paulo Díaz, and Borja. Pezzella scored the opening goal for River, with Adam Bareiro staying on the bench.


On Wednesday, the game between Botafogo and São Paulo ended in a 0-0 draw, featuring four players from the CONMEBOL Copa América United States 2024™: Savarino for Botafogo; Rafael, Damián Bobadilla, and Nahuel Ferraresi (who entered in the second half) for São Paulo.


Fluminense secured a 1-0 win over Atlético Mineiro, with Copa América runner-up Jhon Arias on the field. For Mineiro, Junior Alonso, Alan Franco, and Guilherme Arana played, while veteran striker Eduardo Vargas missed the game due to injury.


The first leg of the quarterfinals wrapped up with Peñarol's away win against Flamengo. Three Uruguayans who played in the U.S. – Varela, De la Cruz, and De Arrascaeta – featured for Flamengo, alongside Chilean midfielder Pulgar.


The second-leg matches to determine the Copa Libertadores semifinalists will take place from September 24 to 26.
