The first period seemed destined to end 0-0, but Ortíz capitalized on a rebound after Molina’s shot hit the post, giving Uruguay the lead.
La Celeste extended their advantage to 2-0 with a goal from Maverino, but Ecuador pulled one back in the second period thanks to their No. 10, Lara.
In the third period, Miranda nearly sealed the match, but the crossbar denied Uruguay’s third goal.
Then, in the final moments, Lara struck a long-range shot that bounced just before Molina, leveling the score at 2-2 with less than two minutes remaining.
In the first play of extra time, Laens capitalized on a one-on-one with the goalkeeper to score the winning goal for Uruguay.
It was a victory for La Celeste, who earned two points and will have a bye in the second matchday. Ecuador will look to bounce back against host nation Chile.
