CONMEBOL Copa América™
  • She was named the best player of the Paraguayan league in 2024.
  • She considered retiring but managed to move forward.

Belén Riveros is only 22 years old and has earned her place in the Paraguayan national team, which will compete in the CONMEBOL Copa América Femenina 2025™ starting July 12.

–How do you analyze the group you’re in?

–Tough, competitive teams. We are focused and ready to face these top teams. We have a great squad, well-prepared, and ready to compete at our best.

–You have Brazil and Colombia in the group. In what aspects do you need to improve to beat them, considering only two teams advance?

–Mainly the mental aspect. We’re working on that. We’re aware we’re going up against strong teams, and we’re preparing for it.

–What’s the goal?

–To win our first CONMEBOL Copa América.

–You had a great 2024 with Cerro Porteño and were named the best player in the Paraguayan league.

–Last year wasn’t easy. I even thought about stepping away... I didn’t feel like continuing, but the people around me were like vitamins... They pushed me not to give up on this dream, and today, thanks to God and them, I’m about to debut in a CONMEBOL Copa América.

–Why did you feel that way?

–Mentally, I hit rock bottom. I had to go through that, but thankfully I had people by my side who helped lift me up and keep chasing the dream I’ve had since I was little.

–It was a huge leap: from nearly quitting to being the league’s best player.

–My teammates at Cerro trusted me, the coaching staff too. Everything played a part. The same with the national team... That’s what motivates me to keep growing and learning. And I’m only 22, seeing the U17 girls who won the Copa and qualified for the World Cup… They’ve taught me so much.

–Did you work with a psychologist?

–Yes, Natalia Dancuart. To me, she’s the best. She’s been part of this process. She helped me regain confidence, aim higher, believe I’m capable. She made me understand that I can achieve whatever I set my mind to.

Paraguay’s schedule:

  • Bolivia vs Paraguay (July 13)
  • Colombia vs Paraguay (July 19)
  • Paraguay vs Brazil (July 22)
  • Paraguay vs Venezuela (July 25)

–You finished fourth in 2022. What has improved since then?

–A lot has changed and improved. Our team is very young. We have 6 or 7 experienced players who help us keep up the pace and stay confident. Great work overall. We’re a fast, smart team with a lot of heart.
