Porto Alegre witnessed historic tournament matches

The Arena do Gremio enjoyed Peru’s qualification for the final, the draw between Uruguay and Japan, and the Qatar-Argentina match.

The CONMEBOL Copa América Brazil 2019 finished for Porto Alegre, however, in this stadium Arena do Gremio, five matches and some of them will be remembered as historic.

Peru will seek its third CONMEBOL Copa América title

The most recent and final match in Porto Alegre was the semi-final between Chile and Peru in the famous ‘Pacific Classic’ on July 3rd. The two-time champion was seeking to advance for the third consecutive time to the final of the tournament, but found an Inca team that was more effective and won 0-3.

On Sunday, Peru will fight to win their third CONMEBOL Copa América title. It was 44 years ago that Peru last lifted the trophy of the tournament, it means that qualifying for the final at the Gremio Arena turned out to be a historic result in Porto Alegre.

Japan scored their second point of the tournament: 2-2 against Uruguay

After a difficult beginning in the CONMEBOL Copa América Brazil 2019 in which Chile scored 4-0, the National Team of japan arrived in Porto Alegre for its second match of the group stage, in which it faced the maximum winner of the tournament, Uruguay, last June 20th.

Aware of the importance of a good result for the next phases of the tournament, the Asian team, one of the guests at the competition, showed great football against ‘La Celeste’, achieving an historic result such as a two-goal draw.

With this draw, Japan managed their second point in five CONMEBOL Copa América matches: in their previous invitation to the tournament, they had drawn 1-1 with Bolivia in 1999.

Qatar faced Argentina for the second time in history

The Qatar national team, invited as well as Japan to the CONMEBOL Copa América Brasil 2019, played for the first time in the South American tournament. In the group stage they faced Argentina on June the 23rd, a team against which they had already played in a friendly in 2005 in which Argentina won 3-0.

On this occasion, in an important match for Argentina which was looking for a win to qualify for the quarterfinals, the Qatar team set foot for the first time in the city of Porto Alegre to play a match in an official tournament.

In the end, as in 2005, the Albiceleste won 2-0 this time.

Other meetings at Arena do Gremio

The other duels that took place at the Stadium of Porto Alegre were the second CONMEBOL Copa América match, the 0-0 draw between Venezuela and Peru, in game of the first round of Group A, played on June 15th.

Meanwhile, Brazil faced Paraguay in the quarterfinals on June 27 in the match 19 of the tournament. A goalless draw and a penalty shootout winner for the home team was 4-3.
