  • Jesse Marsch and Canada will look to build upon their strong showing against Argentina in the tournament’s opening match.

  • Jorge Fossati and Peru earned a hard fought point against Chile in their first match in Group A.

The second round of matches in the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™ Group Stage will kick off with Peru and Canada at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas on June 25.

The Canadians played the tournament’s defending champions Argentina in the competition's opening match. Jesse Marsch’s men looked threatening going forward in attack and may have felt that if a few things would have gone their way, it may have been them celebrating an opening match victory. However it wasn’t to be, Argentina won 2-0 and now it’s crunch time for Canada to get out of the Group Stage. For Marsch, he remains relaxed about his team’s composure in front of goal.

"I'm not too concerned about not finishing” Marsch said following his team’s match against Argentina "I know that over time when you get those kinds of quality chances that you're going to score enough goals and we have enough quality on the pitch.”

Peru, who will be lining up opposite the Canadians on Tuesday, limited their first round opponents Chile to just one shot on target in their opening match. It was a hard fought 0-0 draw that also saw the Peruvians lose their captain, Luis Advincula, to injury. Still, La Bicolor left the match against their former manager Ricardo Gareca with a point on the board. They’ll look to build upon it against their foes from Concacaf who they’ve only played one other time in the 21st century. With their third match against Argentina looming, Peru will feel an extra urgency to get a result before a tough match against the defending champs.

Key Facts

- Peru and Canada have clashed only once in history, a match that took place right after the 2010 FIFA World Cup, concluded with a 2-0 victory for Peru.

- Peru has triumphed in its last three matches against Concacaf opponents in the CONMEBOL Copa América™, each ending in a 1-0 scoreline. These victories came against Mexico in 2001 and 2011, and Haiti in 2016. La Bicolor had not won their first three matches against teams from that confederation in the Cup, recording one draw and two losses.

- Peru has never started a CONMEBOL Copa América™ edition without scoring in its first two matches. However, this is the third consecutive edition in which La Bicolor failed to score in their opener game: 0-0 vs Venezuela in 2019, 0-4 vs Brazil in 2021, and 0-0 vs Chile in 2024.

- Paolo Guerrero is on the verge of becoming the player with the most appearances for Peru in the CONMEBOL Copa América™. He currently has 26 matches, and playing against Canada would see him tie with Yoshimar Yotún at 27. Additionally, Pedro Gallese, with 24 appearances, could match Cornelio Heredia for third place in La Bicolor's Copa America rankings.

- Canada's oldest player in their opening match of the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa América™ was Jonathan Osorio, aged 32 years and 9 days. On the other hand, Peru fielded six players older than Osorio in their debut against Chile: Alexander Callens, Luis Advíncula, Pedro Gallese, Gianluca Lapadula, Carlos Zambrano, and Paolo Guerrero.
