The second round of matches in the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™ Group Stage will kick off with Peru and Canada at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas on June 25.
The Canadians played the tournament’s defending champions Argentina in the competition's opening match. Jesse Marsch’s men looked threatening going forward in attack and may have felt that if a few things would have gone their way, it may have been them celebrating an opening match victory. However it wasn’t to be, Argentina won 2-0 and now it’s crunch time for Canada to get out of the Group Stage. For Marsch, he remains relaxed about his team’s composure in front of goal.
"I'm not too concerned about not finishing” Marsch said following his team’s match against Argentina "I know that over time when you get those kinds of quality chances that you're going to score enough goals and we have enough quality on the pitch.”
Peru, who will be lining up opposite the Canadians on Tuesday, limited their first round opponents Chile to just one shot on target in their opening match. It was a hard fought 0-0 draw that also saw the Peruvians lose their captain, Luis Advincula, to injury. Still, La Bicolor left the match against their former manager Ricardo Gareca with a point on the board. They’ll look to build upon it against their foes from Concacaf who they’ve only played one other time in the 21st century. With their third match against Argentina looming, Peru will feel an extra urgency to get a result before a tough match against the defending champs.
