Brazil has a new head coach in its quest to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup: Carlo Ancelotti was officially announced this Monday as the new manager of the Seleção. He replaces Dorival Júnior.
The 65-year-old Italian coached Real Madrid during the 2024/25 season and arrives with a highly decorated résumé: he has won 31 titles as a manager, including five Champions League trophies (three with Madrid, two with Milan). He has also been a league champion in England, Germany, and France. This will be his first experience as the head coach of a national team, although he was an assistant to Arrigo Sacchi in Italy.
“Bringing Carlo Ancelotti to lead Brazil is more than a strategic move. It’s a statement to the world that we are determined to reclaim the top spot on the podium. He is the greatest coach in history and now leads the greatest national team on the planet. Together, we will write new glorious chapters in Brazilian football,” said Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation.
Ancelotti’s first matches will come in June’s World Cup qualifying double-header, where Brazil will face Ecuador and Paraguay. With four matchdays remaining, the Verdeamarelha sits fourth (21 points), currently in a qualifying spot for the next World Cup.
