Brazil's women's football is closing in on a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games! La Canarinha won a historic victory over Spain on Tuesday (6) to secure their place in the Olympic final against the United States.
Before securing a place on the podium, coach Arthur Elias' team would have great challenges to overcome, and not just the 90 minutes against the current FIFA World Cup champion: the Brazilians went to the semifinals without Marta, suspended, and Tamires, after the full-back was ruled out due to an injury. On the field, Brazil was determined to stop the quality of the opponent and exploit counterattacks at speed.
The first goal came early in the first half, when Priscila put pressure on goalkeeper Coll, who kicked against the striker and saw the ball go back into her own net. With the advantage, the Brazilian team continued to create great chances in quick transitions until Gabi Portilho extended it in stoppage time of the first half.
In the second half, the Spaniards continued to pile on pressure, but were stopped in a brilliant performances by defender Tarciane and, especially, goalkeeper Lorena, one of Brazil's great highlights at these Olympics. Adriana extended the lead in the 71st minute, taking advantage of a leftover shot of hers, and Kerolin made the fourth in stoppage time. Spain cashed twice with Paralluelo, but it was not enough to avoid elimination.
To reach the grand final, Brazil overcame Group C which consited of Nigeria (1-0), Spain (0-2) and Japan (1-2) to advance as one of the best third-placed teams in the Group Stage. In the quarterfinals, the Brazilian women's team beat France for the first time in its history before triumphing over the current world champions.
