  • Di Maria played 117 minutes of the final, helping his country capture their second straight continental trophy

Perfect endings are often hard to find in sports. This is all the more reason to celebrate them when they come around. Angel Di Maria, one of La Albiceleste’s greatest players in recent history, won the Superior Player of the Match Michelob ULTRA award following his play during Argentina’s victory at the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™ final. It capped off a brilliant tournament for the veteran winger, who also announced it would be his final match for the national team.

Di Maria was born in Rosario, Argentina, just like his good friend and teammate Lionel Messi, who shared the pitch with him during the final. Di Maria played for 117 minutes, sprinting up and down late into extra-time to help his country get their second straight title over the line. He led the champions in chances created (3) in the final, as well as shots (2) and fouls won (2). He also had the most touches of Argentina’s front three (60 touches), highlighting how involved he was in La Albiceleste’s victory.

The 2014 Argentine Footballer of Year wore the Argentine jersey for the last time, finishing his international career as a World Cup and two time CONMEBOL Copa América™ champion.

As his teammates celebrated around him when the final whistles sounded, it would be hard to think of a better way for his time with the national team to end.
