'Maestro Eterno': Tabárez looks to make more history at the CONMEBOL Copa América

In his first CONMEBOL Copa América as Uruguay boss in 1989 he finished runner-up. On the verge of managing at his seventh continental competition, à“scar Washington Tabárez continues to write history in Uruguay and across on the continent.

At 74 years old, ‘El Maestro’ approaches another CONMEBOL Copa América, after having lead La Celeste in the 1989, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2016 and 2019 editions.

As well as great longevity he can also reflect on major success.  Tabárez lifted the trophy in Argentina in 2011 at the Monumental to reafirm Uruguay’s position as the country with the most contintal titles (15), overtaking the host nation.

This Friday’s game against Argentina will be his 31st in the competition (7 in his first spell and 24 since he returned to La Celeste in 2006), making him the manager with the four most games in the history of the tournament.

Of the 30 games he has managed at the CONMEBOL Copa América, Tabárez has oveseen 13 wins, 8 draws and 9 losses.

Far from resting on his laureles, ‘El Maestro’ is once again prepared for a new adventure with Uruguay. His Uruguay, with whom he will once again look to conquer the continent’s greats and write a fresh chapter in a career full of glory.
