All the Results from the South American World Cup Qualifiers Matchdays 9 and 10

Two new matchdays were played between October 10 and 15 as the road to the 2026 World Cup continues.

  • Brazil won both matches.
  • Messi returned with a hat-trick, and Argentina remains the leader.

A thrilling double matchday of the South American Qualifiers took place: Brazil struggled in their first match but secured a dramatic victory, and in the second match, they shone against Peru.


Meanwhile, the reigning CONMEBOL Copa América™ champions, Argentina, had a brilliant home match against Bolivia with Lionel Messi returning to his homeland.


Matchdays 11 and 12 will be played in November and will be the last of 2024.


Matchday 9


  • Bolivia 1-0 Colombia (October 10, El Alto): Bolivia secured their third consecutive win in the qualifiers (the first time since 1993) and handed Colombia their first loss. Miguel Terceros scored the winning goal.
  • Venezuela 1-1 Argentina (October 10, Maturín): The reigning CONMEBOL Copa América™ champions took the lead with a goal from Otamendi early on, but Venezuela equalized through Salomón Rondón, one of their standout players.
  • Ecuador 0-0 Paraguay (October 10, Quito): Both teams, with Argentine coaches who began their tenures in September (Beccacece and Alfaro), could not break the deadlock.
  • Chile 1-2 Brazil (October 10, Santiago): A dramatic comeback by Brazil after falling behind 0-1 with a goal from Eduardo Vargas. Igor Jesus scored before halftime, and Luiz Henrique sealed the win in the final moments for Dorival Júnior's team.
  • Peru 1-0 Uruguay (October 11, Lima): Peru earned their first win in the qualifiers, with Miguel Araujo scoring in the 88th minute. It had been 7 years since Peru last defeated Uruguay in the qualifiers.

Matchday 10


  • Colombia 4-0 Chile (October 15, Barranquilla): Néstor Lorenzo's team bounced back quickly from their first defeat with a convincing win to stay second in the standings. Sánchez, Díaz, Durán, and Sinisterra scored for the runners-up of the last CONMEBOL Copa América™.
  • Argentina 6-0 Bolivia (October 15, Buenos Aires): A dominant performance by Argentina, led by a brilliant Messi, who scored 3 goals and assisted Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez. Thiago Almada scored the remaining goal.
  • Paraguay 2-1 Venezuela (October 15, Asunción): Venezuela took the lead through Aramburu, but Paraguay turned the game around with two goals from substitute Antonio Sanabria. Alfaro's team is now in a World Cup qualifying position.
  • Uruguay 0-0 Ecuador (October 15, Montevideo): A goalless draw at the Centenario. Both teams remain in World Cup qualification spots.
  • Brazil 4-0 Peru (October 15, Brasília): Raphinha scored twice from the penalty spot, while Andreas Pereira and Luiz Henrique completed the rout. Dorival Júnior's team achieved a perfect score in this double matchday, closing in on the top spots.

When will the Qualifiers return?


Matchdays 11 and 12 of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup will be played between November 14 and 19.

CONMEBOL has 6 direct spots for the 2026 World Cup, while the seventh-placed team will play an intercontinental playoff.
