  • Berhalter will be leading the U.S.A during CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™ in his second stint as manager of his home country.

  • He becomes only the second manager in U.S.A history to coach the national team while the country hosts CONMEBOL Copa América™.

As the host nation and with a current golden generation of players coming through, the United States will have high hopes going into CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™. At the helm of it all will be Gregg Berhalter,

Berhalter, who was born in Englewood, New Jersey in 1973, will be coaching in the tournament for the first time. As a player, he was a part of the United States fourth place finish in 1995, aged only 21 at the time.

Now 50 years old, he’s back in the world’s oldest international tournament with high expectations.

The former midfielder played college soccer at the University of North Carolina before he’d leave his junior year to sign a professional contract with Zwolle in the Netherlands. The next six years he’d play for several other Dutch club’s such as Sparta Rotterdam and Cambuur Leeuwarden before a brief spell at Crystal Palace in England. He’d round out his career in Europe in Germany, playing for Energie Cottbus and 1860 Munich before returning to the United States and ending his career with the LA Galaxy.

He then began his coaching career, first as an assistant with the Galaxy and then landing his first managerial job with Swedish club Hammarby. He’d return to the United States again in 2013 to become the manager of the Columbus Crew, who he’d lead to MLS Cup 2015.

Then in 2018, he was named head coach of the United States Men’s National Team, following the country’s disappointing qualifying campaign that saw the U.S. miss out on the 2018 World Cup. He helped the team qualify for the 2022 World Cup where they’d reach the round of 16. Following the World Cup, his contract expired but six months later, he was named the American’s head coach for the second time.

The New Jersey native enters CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™ with a large group of his players entering their prime. Players such as Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams, who’ve come through the U.S. setup from a young age under Berhalter, will be key in the American’s quest to win the title on their home soil.

Berhalter and his team begin their campaign against Bolivia, on June 23 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Tickets are still available here.
