Since the first tournament in 1916 to the tournament that just finished in 2024, the way the champion has been crowned has moved from a round-robin format, to a knockout stage with home and away matches, back to the round-robin before finally reaching the modern version of the competition that you see today. This story lists every edition in which a champion was decided in a finals format, which began in 1975.
From 1975 to 1983, the final was determined in a home and away format with two matches taking place. If both teams each won a match, like what happened in the 1975 and 1979 edition, a playoff was played. In 1979, since the playoff ended in a draw, Paraguay was crowned champions on aggregate. The 1989 and 1991 editions returned to a round-robin format before the competition shifted to the modern single knockout format.
